Schwab Cistern Takes Too Long to Fill
The cistern takes much longer than usual to refill after flushing
Identify the model first.
The same symptom can have different causes. Confirm the cistern label, installation generation and applicable manufacturer instructions. Use only safely accessible checks; ask technical support when unsure.

Check the Float Adjustment Screw Position
The official Schwab documentation for models 187 and 198 identifies the cause of slow filling as an incorrect position of the float adjustment screw on the filling valve. When the screw is in the wrong position, it restricts the valve opening and reduces the flow rate into the cistern. On model 187: The documentation specifies the float should be set at 36–39 mm. Adjust the float adjustment screw to its proper position. On model 198: Adjust the float adjustment screw to its proper position. This is a zero-cost adjustment that restores normal fill speed immediately.
Check 02
Clean the Fill Valve Filter Screen
Model 199's documentation specifically lists "dirt in the valve filter reduces or blocks the water flow" as a cause. The fill valve includes a small mesh filter screen where supply water enters. In UAE water conditions with high sediment and calcium, this filter blocks over time. To clean: turn off the water supply, flush the cistern, remove the top cap of the fill valve by pressing down and rotating anti-clockwise, remove the filter screen, rinse it under a tap, and use a soft brush to remove trapped particles. Reassemble and test. This resolves roughly 40% of slow-fill complaints at zero cost.
Check 03
Check the Angle Stop Valve
Model 198's documentation specifically notes that a partially or minimally opened angle stop valve reduces water flow. Open the angle stop valve to maximum rate of flow. Also check whether other taps in the bathroom have low pressure — if so, the issue is building-wide water pressure rather than the cistern.
Check 04
Replace the Fill Valve If Adjustment Fails
If adjusting the float screw and cleaning the filter do not restore normal fill speed, the fill valve diaphragm has deteriorated and is restricting flow internally. Replace the complete Fluidmaster Fill Valve (Part 238 956). Turn off the water supply, flush to drain, unscrew the fill valve lock nut from below the cistern, lift out the old valve, insert the new valve, hand-tighten the lock nut, and set the float height to 10 mm below the overflow tube. A healthy cistern should refill in 60–90 seconds.
These checks provide context for a support enquiry. Confirm any replacement article against the exact model drawing and manufacturer instructions.
